Enhancement

Before the Surgery:

Lip enlargement options can be temporary or permanent:

Temporary enhancement:

Temporary enhancement uses fillers which are injected into the lips.

Both the upper and lower lips may be injected.

The amount of filler volume injected and the location of the injections with in the lips can produce a variety of different appearing enhancements.

The filler is slowly removed from the lips from body metabolism of the hyaluronic acid which makes up the filler. The duration of the enhancement effect is 6-12 months.

Permanent enhancement uses fat graft which is injected into the lips.

The fat graft is taken from the patient’s hips or abdomen, prepared, and then injected into the lip area. The majority of this injected fat remains as a permanent volume enhancement to the upper (and lower lip).

Surgical manipulation of the upper lip tissue within the inside or outside of the upper lip can produce a permanent upper lip enhancement. The amount of volume enhancement using this technique is more limited than the fat grafting technique.

The Risks:

+ Risks for temporary filler enhancement for facial creases:
  • Scarring
  • Infection
  • Pigmentation change which can be darker or lighter pigmentation to the area treated
  • Prolonged redness (erythema)
  • Early Recurrence of the wrinkling (under filling)
  • Overfilling leaving a contour deformity
  • Prolonged irregular surface of the skin (seen with filling of the eyelids -this is not recommended)
  • Skin damage (necrosis)
  • Allergic reaction
  • Asymmetry
  • Expense
  • *There are many options for injectables. Both medical and non medical practitioners are using injectables. Please ensure that the correct material is being injected by trained medical personnel who are affiliated with a physician experienced in the use and risk of injectables.

Reduction

Before the Surgery:

+ My lips are too big. What are my options to decrease the size of my lips?

Lip Reduction Surgery can be done under local anesthesia

Excess skin and subcutaneous tissue and muscle are removed to produce the desired result.

The resulting scars are hidden within the inside part of the lips.

This is a permanent reduction of the lip size.

The Risks:

+ What are the risks of doing Surgery?

With any surgery there are surgical and anesthetic risks.

Aside from the rare risks of an anesthetic event, some of the general and specific surgical risks for this procedure would include:

scarring

infection

discomfort

asymmetry

bleeding (hematoma): if you take blood thinning medication, this must be stopped at least one week prior to surgery and one week after surgery

Rhytids (Wrinkles)

Before the Surgery:

+ My lips are very wrinkled. What are my treatment options?

Reducing excess lip wrinkles (rhytids) options can be temporary or permanent:

Temporary wrinkle reduction:

Temporary enhancement uses fillers which are injected into the lip wrinkles

Both the upper and lower lips may be injected.

The filler is slowly removed from the lips from body metabolism of the hyaluronic acid which makes up the filler. The duration of the enhancement effect is 6-12 months.

+ Permanent enhancement:

A more permanent enhancement uses dermabrasion, chemical peel or laser resurfacing techniques to treat the upper and lower lip wrinkles (rhytids).

This can be done as an isolated procedure under local anesthetic.

This can also be done in combination with other procedures like a face lift, brow lift, and eyelid surgery.
